Album Review: Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

Artist: Billie Eilish

Album: HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

Release date: May 17, 2024

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT dazzles as an introspective light into Billie Eilish’s 22-year-old self. With themes of sexual identity, feelings of confusion and isolation and heartbreak —the album is witty and enjoyable. “LUNCH” and “THE DINNER” are the standout tracks. Eilish continously shows she has a lot more to explore and share. In HIT ME HARD AND SOFT she drowns into her most authentic self.

Eilish’s third studio album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT was another collaboration between her and her brother Finneas who co-wrote and produced. At just 22, Billie Eilish has accomplished a lot. Throughout her years creating music, Eilish has stamped yet another musical collage of chill melodies and retrospective lyrics into her catalog. Billie Eilish establishes that she is a poetic force who can be misunderstood. Eilish opens with a brutally honest “SKINNY” that reflects on her experiences with body image and closes with a soft string section.

"People say I look happy, just because I got skinny."

"When I step off the stage, I'm a bird in a cage, I'm a dog in a dog pound" - "SKINNY"

Referencing the Japanese classic Hayao Miyazaki's 2001 film Spirited Away, “CHIHRO” explores the theme of the unknown. In Spirited Away Chihiro is thrown into a terrifying world of magic, witches and spirits and watches her parents get turned into gluttonous pigs.

"Wringing my hands in my lap, and they tell me it's all been a trap, and you don''t know if you'll make it back, i said, '"No, don't say that'" - "CHIHRO"

"BIRDS OF A FEATHER" is very reminiscent of 90’s alternative pop. Playing around metaphorically with her sexuality on “LUNCH,” Eilish dives into the idea of pure lust and attraction.

Eilish’s lyrics will always be interesting and a perfect blend of wonder between somewhere enigma and bluntness. Things get unique on “L’AMOUR DE MA VIE” as Eilish included a synth-pop sound that completely transforms the direction of the album a third of the way through.

The seemingly satirical “The Diner” is superior and has the classic Eilish beats. Is this a love song when your emotions run awry and cause stalker vibes? She captures the passion of love and its unwarranted consequences with humor exceptionally.

Eilish is comfortable throughout HIT ME HARD AND SOFT and bounces around different elements of synths, pop, marimbas and low-fi beats.

According to Apple Music, Eilish stated that 'I don't know if I'm making anything good, this might be terrible…’ But now I'm like, 'Yeah, but I'm comfortable in who I am now.' I feel like I know who I am now.”

Roses given: 4/5
