Album Review: Screaming Females - Desire Pathway

New Jersey’s own punk rock band Screaming Females is back with their fiery album Desire Pathway. Desire Pathway is a melting pot of blaring guitar riffs, captivating lyrics, soothing melodies, and a captivating sound that proves Screaming Females deep passion for their music. Their opening track, the supreme "Brass Bell" , is a pounding and riveting experience that captivates the bands strength and longevity. Desire Pathway is a bold and entertaining statement, yet still cohesive with the rest of Screaming Females' discography.

"I'm living in a brass bell and,
It's too loud, it's too loud"

"Desert Train" is an upbeat anthem that showcases the intricate guitar work and talent of singer and guitarist Marissa Paternoster. The funky, yet fluid, bass work by Mike "King Mike" Abbate provides the underlying enthusiasm of “Desert Train”. The intro certainly has all the right desert vibes, and quickly leads into a strong melodic chorus that is a staple of Desire Pathways.

"Forget my name I'm a freight train in thе desert dragging chains"

Shifting to a more gentle heart felt tune on "Let You Go", the overall theme of the album does not get lost and is still a delicate track that deserves a congratulatory of effort. Within "Beyond The Void" is a unique, interesting, and medieval like feeling with the magic of punk still intertwined heavily into the complex song. Paternoster's vibrato has the ability to pierce throughout many of the tracks with the Screaming Females signature stylization with ease.

"I'm chained I'm lost in your elegance"

Strongly reminiscent of early punk, “It's All Said and Done” is sure to be a fan favorite and crowd pleaser. The special vocaling style of Paternoster throughout the verses transform the track, as she sings in a strongly assertive manner.

"So low" shows a beautiful, simplistic, and raw side, with a single guitar playing. "So Low" is still deep and poetic enough to not diminish from Desire Pathways' overall energetic sound. "Titan" is the energetic climax of the album and the booming drums of Jarrett Dougherty are a highlight and nothing short of intoxicating. "Titan" doesn't disappoint, and it’s not a Screaming Females song without a breezy bass riff and a fuzzy guitar solo.

"Ornament" is an illustration of the bands playful nature that can still be impactful and harmonized in a simultaneous nature. The metaphoric nature is poetic in a sense and captures the true vibes of the band's essence.

"I want it all, An ornament
Your head hangs heavy on it"

Screaming Females refuse to settle down and let anything stand in the way of their musical energy. Each song plays out as anything but dainty, and their electrical charge rings throughout Desire Pathways. The album is chock-full of bouncy and catchy melodies that Screaming Females seems to dispense with ease. Desire Pathways is dynamic and thrilling and there is a certain balance that is intertwined through start to finish. "Brass Bell" reels you in to a roller coaster of emotions and the long lasting camaraderie between all three members makes for one hell of a ride.
